This Photosynthesis Lab by NewPath Learning is an online virtual investigation for determining the factors affecting photosynthesis using the aquatic plant Elodea as an example. In this activity, students will aim to determine the effects of carbon dioxide and light on the rate of photosynthesis. Students will adjust the concentrations and intensity, and count the number of oxygen bubbles released from the plant. Simple and clear instructions are given with good animations and visual effects, making this virtual lab an engaging activity for students to learn the basic concepts of photosynthesis and affecting factors.

Syllabus Outcomes:
NSW Science K–10 (incorporating Science and Technology K–6) Syllabus
Outcomes:
- SC4-14LW relates the structure and function of living things to their classification, survival and reproduction
- SC4-15LW explains how new biological evidence changes people's understanding of the world
- SC4-6WS follows a sequence of instructions to safely undertake a range of investigation types, collaboratively and individually
- SC4-7WS processes and analyses data from a first-hand investigation and secondary sources to identify trends, patterns and relationships, and draw conclusions
- LW3 Multicellular organisms contain systems of organs that carry out specialised functions that enable them to survive and reproduce.
a. identify the materials required by multicellular organisms for the processes of respiration
and photosynthesis
NSW Biology Stage 6 Syllabus
Students:
- 8.3.3.2.3 identify the materials required for photosynthesis and its role in ecosystems
- 8.3.3.2.4 identify the general word equation for photosynthesis and outline this as a summary of a chain of biochemical reactions
- 14.1 analyse information to:
a) identify trends, patterns and relationships as well as contradictions in data and information
d) predict outcomes and generate plausible explanations related to the observations
g) use cause and effect relationships to explain phenomena
